Teaching Practice And Observation In Real Classrooms
What do we understand by "effective teaching?' "Effective
teaching" comprises of sound knowledge of the subject matter combined
with sensitivity to and concerned with students' needs and requirements,
teacher's ability to stimulate interest in the subject along with
implementation of the latest methodology and techniques. To be able to do
this the teacher should have gone through a series of teaching practice
sessions and classroom observations during the course of training.
We at American TESOL Institute value and consider the teaching practice
sessions as one of the main components of the Teacher training Course and
acknowledge the importance and contribution of these sessions in the
final shaping of an effective teacher. The teaching practice sessions are
an excellent tool for orientation and professional development and make
the trainees aware of and to be sensitive to their role as a teacher. It
is not enough to have a sound knowledge of the subject but one should
also be able to reflect on one's teaching and make an effort to improve
on it.
The teacher trainee has to undergo a few sessions of peer teaching. After
every practice session, the trainee teachers are provided with effective
feedback not only by our experienced trainer observers but also by the
peers themselves to evaluate and review on the ways and means of
improving on the input sessions. During these sessions, the teacher is
also trained to handle a class comfortably, confidently and effectively.
After the in house peer teach sessions the trainee teachers are taken to
different schools in order to provide them with firsthand experience of
teaching in a real class room situation so that they are competent enough
to meet the challenges of facing a real life classroom. This is a real
learning experience for them as they are not only expected to translate
knowledge into instructional discourse but it also gives the trainee
teachers exposure and practical experience and helps them to grow as a
teacher before they go in for teaching jobs. Observation reports then
provided to the trainees are based on the teaching skills, student
teacher interaction, overall classroom management and ways of making the
experience effective and enjoyable.
