26th October 2021

At times when you are hurrying and you're stuck in disgusting traffic, you will often notice a school bus near you. Nostalgia starts flowing in every vein of your body and you cherish every moment be it bitter or sweet. School life is extremely eventful and nobody can ever forget a conflict between teacher and student. You will end up laughing now at remembering those bittersweet times but no matter what, without such issues school life is not complete.

Conflict in school is indeed a huge deal. There can be lots of disagreements in school. They might be between classmates, between teacher and student, between parents and teachers, and the list is endless. Based on these, there are several conflict management approaches that are being practiced in schools.

The school counselors, administrators, and teachers are parts of the school counseling department. Their core responsibilities are to check how students are coordinating among themselves and their individual performance as well as growth level. They also take care of how ardently the students are following the school norms and their behavioral patterns.

Types of conflict in school:

Well, a simple difference of opinion can cause a horrible conflict between classmates and also with the teachers. Breathe! This is a very common phenomenon but should never be overlooked. Conflicts with teachers are absolutely disrespectful and must be handled with care.

If you’re a teacher, you will learn why there is a conflict between you and your student. Conflicts can be of various types. It has often been observed that students lose interest in the class and start engaging in something else. They may be checking their phones, reading a comic book, gossiping with other fellow classmates, and so on.

The reason behind such actions can be of different kinds. You have to notice why the student is behaving like that. It is always advisable to do the root cause analysis at first. A student getting diverted to some other activity in an ongoing class might be because he/she is having learning disabilities. In such a case, if not diagnosed, it can lead to a disastrous result.

Sometimes, if you see that one of your students is refusing to follow the basic guidelines, remember, it is a red flag! Once the class is over, ask him/her to meet you in person after school hours. Talk to him/her personally and understand what triggered such an action. If you see that the student is reluctant to answer, just do not let it go. Be polite and enquire. You must know every minute detail behind the disobedience.

While having that conversation, you might surprisingly figure out that your student is having learning disabilities because of which he/she is losing interest in academics. Without any further delay, convey this message to the school counselor as well as the parents of that student.

On the other hand, if you discover that the student has no reason to be inattentive in the class, make him/her understand that it is wrong. You should make it clear that breaching basic norms and regulations doesn’t demand an appreciation and it is sheer disappointing. He/she should be aware of the fact that repetition will invite a parent-teachers meeting.

Post that, observe how the student is behaving in the class. Keep an eye on him/her if he/she is again breaching the rules. It can be a new scene like using a cellphone. Again, repeat the same procedure. This time you should inform the dean or the HOD about the incident.

After a few weeks, if you again come across such a plot, do not hesitate to arrange a parent-teacher meeting. Make sure, this time the school counselor, the dean, and the school administrator remain present in this meeting. Parents must know why is their child behaving awkwardly at school. In fact, parents can also give any input if the child is going through any other internal issue.

School conflict is definitely a serious business

If given proper attention, it can be solved like an expert. It is never wanted that a student will get involved in a conflict with a teacher every now and then. The relationship between a teacher and a student is supposed to be extremely cordial, full of respect, and most importantly, pure.

Conflicts, be it anywhere, disturb the harmony of a place at an ultimate level. School life is one of the precious phases anybody can ever have. Hence, such a phase should not be wasted or taken for granted.

Disagreements can happen but that does not mean they will get the situation topsy-turvy forever. Counseling courses for teachers and school counseling courses give lessons to the learners about how to deal with such sensitive and critical issues. They learn how to come up with apt solutions that will spread peace everywhere.
