How to Become a Certified Preschool Teacher
Although the educational context varies from country to country but the principles and theories regarding how children learn remain the same. Therefore in order to become a qualified Preschool teacher certain conditions need to be met. Firstly, an orientation or love for the young learner category is essential, this needs to be backed up by a training or educational qualification regarding early childhood education and definitely some experience being physically in the classroom.
Step One: Become aware of what the schools in that region require
Before deciding on your career it is important to know what kind of training and minimum qualification is specified by the education department of that region. Some parts demand a minimum school leaving certificate while others may want a degree. However irrespective of what the minimum educational qualification is, a teacher training certificate is essential to get a teaching job. This training and its duration also varies depending on the course provider. So it is important for you to consider all that is being covered by the training program, its relevancy and effectiveness.
Step Two: The Appropriate Training
It really does not matter whether you have a post graduation degree, a graduate degree, a diploma or just a school leaving certificate as your educational qualification, what really matters is your teacher training. Teaching is a skill and therefore one needs both training and practice in it. To teach preschoolers effectively one needs to be aware of early childhood theories and principles, educational psychology, methods and techniques that engage young learners, how to handle a classroom full of 2 to 5 year olds. An effective preschool teacher training will not only cover all this but a lot more. Last but not the least the practical experience of being with children is the core to all teacher learning and training.
Step Three: The orientation
Teaching preschoolers is so different from teaching any other age group and essentially a preschool teacher loves being with children. The patience, motivation, organization, understanding that a preschool teacher requires is far more than a university professor. A preschool teacher should like to and have the experience of being with children only then will he/ she love working with children.
Step Four: Get Certified
No Preschool will allow you entry into their classroom just based on your claim of love for children. A proper teacher training qualification is the basis on which schools hire preschool teachers. Therefore the very first step to a preschool teacher career is to get the right certification. Choose an internationally recognized course provider and check on their accreditation and affiliations. Next go through the curriculum very carefully. The course duration should be that of a diploma program and the course content should cover both theory and practical application of the same in the right balance. The curriculum should have appropriate and relevant techniques and methodology. Your learning should be evaluated and you should be given proper feedback to make your training more effective. Only then will you be able to do justice to your responsibility of a preschool teacher.
Step Five: Keep yourself updated
Education is a dynamic field. Along with the change in environment both social and physical, the demands and needs of the learner changes too. Therefore preschool teachers need to keep themselves abreast with new ideas, theories and methods that evolve at every stage. Self learning and education is a lifelong process for a dedicated teacher.
